2008 Hornets Rules

The hornet stock class is intended to be an entry-level class of racing.  Cars are mostly stock with some modifications allowed to enhance performance, handling and safety.  Major modifications are not intended in this class.  Age limit is 13 to 17 years old.

 

USC general track rules supersede car division rules. 2008 division rules supersede all previous editions of the rules for HORNETS.

 

COMPETING MODELS

Any make or year of American or foreign compact car or truck except convertibles is allowed.  The maximum wheelbase is 108” for cars and trucks.

 

ENGINE AND MANIFOLD

4 cylinder motors only.  Motors will be GM to GM, Ford-to-Ford, etc. and in stock position. Engine size limitation for overhead cams 2350cc; push rod type motors maximum 2550cc, with three valves per cylinder maximum.  Heads must remain stock type for make and model.  OEM pistons only.  Porting and/or polishing not allowed.  Engines may not exceed 165-psi compression.  Single overhead stock cam only, no roller cams are allowed.  Carburetor maximum is any 350-CFM two-barrel stock carburetor (no modifications). Stock fuel injection only. NO Turbos.

 

TRANSMISSIONS

Cars and trucks with standard transmission must have working clutch.  No buttons or-dog clutches allowed.  No stall converters or fluid valves.  No mini clutches.

 

REAR ENDS

Locked rear ends are acceptable.  Drive shafts (if rear Wheel Drive) must be painted white and there must be a safety loop under front half of shaft (minimum 1”X 3/16” chain.)

 

SUSPENSION

Suspension must be stock but maybe modified for safety and handling.

 

WHEEL AND TIRES

Wheels must be approved steel or aluminum 13”, 14” and 15” diameter maximum. Tires maximum of 8” width.

 

BODIES

Cars and trucks must have factory or steel bodies.  All doors, trunk, and hoods must be properly secured.  Fender well may be cut up to 4” from tire.  Hoods may have hole to allow one element of carburetor.  Stock rear spoilers allowed in cars or trucks.  All chrome, emblems and glass and interior must be removed.  Reasonable looking grills, headlight opening covered bumpers. Parts damaged must be repaired and painted by next race. Fabricated or aluminum door panels are allowed 20 gauge minimum.  Trucks: Beds must be covered top or bottom from cab to tailgate. If using a cover on the top of the bed, it may not be higher than the edge of the side beds of box.  Must be stock appearing measurements.

 

FRAMES

Cars and trucks must maintain original frame.  Uni-body cars or trucks may tie front and rear stubs together with boxed tubing 2” wide x 2” high, 120-wall steel must be welded to rocker panel. Can X-brace uni-body frame with 2” X 2” .120 wall tubing and tied to roll cage. Must have original firewall and floor plan.

 

BUMPERS

Front and rear must have pipe tubing for bumper (maximum 2”) or stock bumper, securely attached. Must have tow Loop front and rear. Exposed bumpers must have return loops to frame or body.

 

ROLLBARS

Mandatory six-point full roll cage required.  ALL cars must have three door bars on driver’s side and two bars on the right side.  Cage must be a minimum of 1 ½" tubing, minimum .095 wall. Cage may extend into trunk compartment.  Uni-body cage must use 6” x 6”, ¼” thick plates welded to floor pan to weld roll bars.  ALL bars on driver’s side must be padded.

 

WEIGHT

Cars/trucks will weight 2400 lbs. with driver.

 

FUEL & FUEL TANK

Fuel tank (fuel cells optional but recommended) must be properly secured in trunk area. Floor pan or fuel cell container must provide protection for front of fuel cell, from objects coming up under car or truck.  A steel firewall not less than 20-gauge thickness must be located between trunk and driver.  Fuel tank must be filled from inside trunk area. No filling tubes extending to outside of trunk. Fuel tank or fuel cell container must be installed as far as possible in trunk compartment.  Fuel tank must be secured with 1” steel strap no less than two lengthwise and two crosswise.  Fuel line that runs through driver’s compartment must be enclosed in metal tube or securely welded or bolted to floor.  Only OEM manual fuel pumps allowed cars and trucks with OEM electric stock pumps must have shut off switch.
